The 13th of Jamadi Al-Thani is a reminder of a sad day; a day when a devoted mother and a great lady from a lineage of warriors, took her flight towards the Almighty. Umm Al-Banin, the mother of the sons of Ali (peace be upon him), patience and perseverance, with the dedication of four righteous children to her master, Hussein bin Ali (peace be upon him), she departed for the homeland with a heart full of love and affection. Her name is Fatemeh and her nickname is Umm al-Banin (Mother of Sons). Her father is Hizam and her mother is Thumamah or Layla. Her husband is Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) and her children are Abbas (peace be upon him), Abdullah, Ja'far and Uthman, all four of whom were martyred in the land of Karbala and at the feet of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him). Her grave is in Medina and the Baqi cemetery.
After the martyrdom of Fatemeh Zahra (peace be upon her), Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) called his brother Aqeel - who was familiar with the science of Arab genealogy - and asked him to choose a wife for him from the lineage of warriors so that she would bring forth a brave son for his master. Aqeel chose Fatima Kalabiyah for the Imam, whose tribe and family, the Banu Kalab, were unparalleled in bravery, and Imam Ali (peace be upon him) also liked this choice. Shiite scholars have praised Umm al-Banin's courage, eloquence, and love for the Ahl al-Bayt, especially Imam Hussain (a.s.), and have spoken of her goodness and greatness. According to the second martyr and the most respected person, Umm al-Banin, she had a strong love for the Prophet's family and had dedicated herself to serving them. The Ahl al-Bayt also had special respect for her and would visit her on Eid days. Baqir Sharif Qureshi has also said that no woman in history has been seen like Umm al-Banin who had such sincere love for her adopted children and preferred them over her own children.
What does Umm al-Banin mean? Umm al-Banin means mother of sons, and this is why Fatimah, the daughter of Hizam, was called this because she had four sons by Imam Ali (AS).
Umm al-Banin (peace be upon him), the mother of Hazrat Abbas (peace be upon him), is one of the prominent mothers in history whose life was full of love for guardianship and Imamate. This virtuous lady, aware of her time, was among those who defended the sanctity of Hussain and organized the mourning assembly for the martyr of Karbala. Her personal qualities and characteristics, including: moral virtues, human perfections, strength of faith, patience, insight, etc., made her a worthy lady of the ladies in the house of Imamate. Umm al-Banin (peace be upon him), with her knowledge of the status of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon him), raised children like Hazrat Abu al-Fadl (peace be upon him) in her lap, who did not give up guardianship until the last moments of their lives.
In the history of early Islam, there were many women who fulfilled their mission of humanizing men, at the same level as men and sometimes ahead of them. In addition to carrying out their usual activities at home, they also sacrificed their lives in the defense of Islamic values in the stronghold of society. Therefore, introducing successful models and intellectual and practical examples of diligent women in the history of Islam is of great importance, and efforts should be made to identify examples of wisdom, faith, and virtue. Among them, Umm al-Banin (a.s.), the mother of Hazrat Abbas (a.s.), had a special place. In such a way that the name of Abbas (a.s.) cannot be imagined in the mind without the name of his mother, Umm al-Banin (a.s.).
